The study of how decisions are structured before they are made.
Decisions begin before we decide. What we notice, what we assume, what we believe is possible, and how a situation is framed shape the choices that appear available. This work examines that earlier territory, before interpretation becomes judgment, judgment becomes strategy, and strategy becomes action.
What it is
This work is concerned with the structure underlying how decisions are framed, interpreted, and acted upon.
It examines the conditions that shape:
- what is considered a viable option
- how situations are understood
- how outcomes are anticipated
These conditions are often treated as given. They are not. They are constructed, reinforced, and, in many cases, misidentified.
Why it matters
Most analysis begins with the decision. Some begin with the strategy. Few examine the structure within which both are formed.
When that structure is misunderstood, decisions that appear sound produce outcomes that are difficult to explain. This work focuses on that prior layer.
Decision Environments
Decision Environments is a core construct within this work. It describes the structural context within which decisions are made, interpreted, and constrained.
Interpretive Strategy
Interpretive Strategy is the applied part of this work. It focuses on how actors interpret the environments in which they operate, and how those interpretations shape strategic decisions.
Strategy does not emerge in isolation. It is formed through:
- assumptions about constraints
- perceptions of opportunity
- interpretations of risk and reversibility
These interpretations are not always accurate. Strategic failures are often attributed to poor execution, flawed planning, or lack of alignment. These explanations may be correct. But they can overlook a prior issue: the decision environment itself may have been misinterpreted.
About this work
My Ph.D. research examines the hidden structures that shape how people interpret complex situations. It asks what is already decided before a choice appears, and why that earlier ground matters.
